FAQs
We’ve compiled some of the most common questions we get asked. Your answer might already be right here!

While both may have docks and boats, a Yacht Club is first and foremost a social organization—a community built around shared interests in boating. We host a wide range of events, from casual gatherings to formal celebrations, as well as races, cruises, and family-friendly activities throughout the year.
A marina, by contrast, is typically a commercial facility focused solely on boat storage and services.
At our Club, many (but not all) members are boaters—ranging from sailors and powerboaters to kayakers and paddleboarders—but owning a boat isn’t a requirement.

Completing an application is a standard part of our membership process. It allows the Board to get to know prospective members and helps us maintain the welcoming, safe, and connected community our Club is known for.
The application also provides important contact details, which are essential for communication and safety—especially in the event of an emergency.

FHYC is proud to be a community of many like-minded families, often multi-generational. We maintain a facility that is safe for kids, offering swimming, a playground, kid’s activities, a Junior Sailing program, and the most fun sandbox on Lake Ontario.
Families are not just welcome but encouraged, as are your supervised guests. You’ll often find mixed members sharing a common meal or evenings around a campfire. We’ve even had a Kid’s Fishing Derby and dance marathon recently.

We are a member-managed Club because we believe that working together builds a stronger, more connected community. By taking part in the care and upkeep of our Club, members not only help manage expenses, but also contribute to a shared sense of ownership.
Each member is asked to contribute about eight hours annually, which can be easily fulfilled by joining in on Opening or Closing Day activities, serving on a committee or the Board, sponsoring an event, or lending a hand in other ways. We believe everyone has something valuable to contribute.

The Club is a New York State Membership Corporation with a constitution and bylaws. It exists solely for the benefit of the Members with no profits leaving the Club. The Club is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the Members annually and the physical assets are held in trust by a committee of Trustees elected by the Board.
